Workloads with many small files or legacy components rely to a very high degree on block-based storage. At the same time, modern applications must be highly available. However, conventional EBS storage is always limited to only one availability zone (AZ).

Our solution based on Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP enables multi-AZ block storage for EKS clusters. In addition, our customers automatically get other features such as fast cloning, storage duplication, and synchronization with NetApp on-prem storage.

For EBS storage to be offloaded to another AZ, we create a storage backend across two AZs for multi-AZ block storage, which means that only one managed node group is required for EKS.

The workloads are then automatically tolerant of AZ failures. This also eliminates the need to develop and operate a custom replication solution such as DRBD.
